bellville cape townThe residential suburb of Bellville lies a mere 25 kilometres outside of the centre of Cape Town on the N1 towards Stellenbosch, in the Tygerberg hills. Bellville falls within the area of the City of Cape Town municipality.

Bellville was originally called "12 Mile Stone", since it is located 12 miles (20 km) from Cape Town city centre. It was originally founded as a railway station on the line from Cape Town to Stellenbosch and Strand. In 1861 it was renamed Bellville, after the surveyor general Charles Bell. The city is located in the northern suburbs of the greater Cape Town area. It is very central, situated close to the airport, various golf courses, wine routes and shopping complexes.

The Karl Bremer Hospital in Bellville functioned as the Academic Hospital for the University of Stellenbosch Medical School and the new Tygerberg Hospital now houses the medical school. The University of the Western Cape is also situated in Bellville.

Situated in Bellville, the Tyger Valley shopping centre is a sprawling mall with a huge variety of shops, boutiques and recreational facilities. The High Street shopping complex is situated just off Durban Road. Adjacent to Durban Road lies Edward Street, filled with popular nightclubs, bars and restaurants catering generally for nightlife entertainment.

The Mayibuye Centre, which houses a collection of material from South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, is worth a visit because most of the collection pieces were originally banned. The multi-purpose Bellville Velodrome is located in the Tyger Valley area of Bellville.

On one of the corners of Voortrekker and Durban Roads, in the heart of Bellville, lies the Twelve-mile Rockstone - an historical monument that marks the distance from Cape Town and the period during which this part of the world was an ‘outspan’ or resting place on the Cape Town to Stellenbosch Route - a welcome resting point for those whose wagons had already battled over the sand of the Cape Flats.

The Bellville Golf course is worth a round on its 18-hole course, which lies in the sheltered valley with wonderful views of the Hottentots Holland Mountain range; and the Tygerberg Nature Reserve is a great outing with a 7.5 kilometre hike that promises superb views over the entire peninsula. The Durbanville Wine Valley, with its historic vineyards, charming eateries and typical South African hospitality, should be top of your itinerary when staying in this part of the world.
